Kindling/ Firewood sticks.

Ever wondered where your kindling comes from ? Kindling should be a processed product from the tree just like firewood seasoned logs and not from recycled pallets and old bits of furniture. Not only is our kindling well seasoned and dry but it is hardwood. We use poplar and it is a little known fact that it is britains quickest growing hardwood,is used for pallet making, veneers and once in huge quantities for matchstick making. It does have a bad reputation for burning but I disagree. The high moisture content creates an issue with people but only because they aren’t patient with it.After all why would you want to make matches out of something that dosen’t burn !

Carbon dioxide and burning firewood.

It is now officially recognised by  experts that carbon is stored in wood until its demise. It should therefore be an important consideration for green support in choosing timber in all forms of construction and furnishing to lock it in.Please support the timber industry in this cause for the sake of our planet.

Softwoods get undeserved bad press.

England’s softwoods are under threat! There is more than timber in conifer forests, but other attributes are unrecognised or under-valued. England’s broadleaved woodlands are rightly lauded and treasured, but society has appeared to turn its back on conifers. What are softwoods? The timber produced from conifer trees is generally referred to as softwood, as opposed to that from broadleaved trees, which is called hardwood (despite some broadleaved species producing timber that is relatively soft). Production of softwood (around 10 million tonnes annually, or nearly 20 times hardwood production, in the UK) supports a considerabe industry, from tree nurseries and woodland management, to harvesting and processing into timber products, for example, fencing, local woodfuel and beams used for construction. In addition, conifer forests provide spectacular backdrops for recreation, such as, horse-riding,walking and mountain biking, while also offering opportunities for wildlife watching. The biodiversity value of which can be considerable, is generally overlooked or unrecognised.Norway spruce cell-grown seedlings in the nursery. The UK industry, from tree nurseries and woodland management, to harvesting and processing into timber products, for example, fencing, local woodfuel and beams used for construction.
