It has been a sad feature of the countryside in the last few decades that the Elm has suffered with the well known Dutch Elm Disease. The Conservation Foundation is attempting to unlock the mystery of why some trees survived Dutch elm disease which wiped out over 25 million elms in the UK.Cuttings taken from mature trees that appear to have resisted Dutch elm disease for over 60 years have been skilfully micro propagated. The resulting saplings are being distributed to hundreds of schools, community groups, local authorities and private landowners who have signed up to take part in the ‘Great British Elm Experiment’ .Participants in the experiment are being asked to log their tree’s progress on a specially developed elm map.Saplings are being offered free to schools and small local organisations, and at a modest cost to others. Each small tree is accompanied by a certificate showing its parent tree and type and schools will also receive a poster with growing tips and project ideas.

Normally at this time of the year the workload tends to taper off. It’s far from that here as we have had to include working weekends for the forseeable future as we aim to keep a tight rein on the schedule.

On the north bank we have crews tackling projects in sproatley and skirlaugh with numerous projects to follow in swanland, beverley, cottingham and hessle.

Over in north lincolnshire and north east lincolnshire we are flat out. With a list of contracts as long as your arm we are ploughing through them as efficiently as we can.It has helped that we have acquired new chip sites recently in the area.

Over in grimsby we are following a schedule that will be taking us through immingham, grimsby, cleethorpes, barrow on humber, barton upon humber, humberstone, healing, laceby, melton ross and kirmington.

Over scunthorpe way we are in crowle, scunthorpe, scawby, brigg, bonby, saxby all saints, south ferriby, winterton, burton stather and messingham.

Phew, plenty to be getting on with there.Hope to have a few photo shots of these on the blog.

Here at woodserve we have existing stocks of firewood and newly cut stock. Some of our well seasoned stock has a moisture content as low as 16 % and quality checks on recently cut firewood for next winter is showing moisture levels averaging 20-22%.Although most of that was felled last Autumn it is really pleasing to see the quality of this firewood come through. The windy, relatively dry winter really helped to kick start the drying process.

It’s funny how no sooner do you think the firewood season is over and suddenly just over the horizon your nearly upon the next one.Strange really as we are still selling large quantities of firewood now so its nearly all year round. When you think that in 6 weeks time the nights will start to draw in its a pretty sobering thought. It really pays to plan now and stock up because before you know it the colder months will be with us. Last winter was predicted to be very cold and turned out to be much milder than expected.Who knows what this winter has in store for us.We break weather records now every year so best be prepared for the worst.
